Barbara A. Ramsay is Chief Conservator at The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Her specialties are paintings conservation and historic painted finishes, but she also oversees a variety of conservation projects involving architectural elements, outdoor sculpture, and others. Ramsay earned an Master of Art Conservation from Queen’s University and has decades of experience in conservation practice, conservation management, and conservation education in Canada and the US. She has served for 10 years as Chief Conservator at The Ringling; 15 years as Director of the ARTEX Conservation Laboratory, Washington DC; 20 years at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC): 18 years as a painting conservator and 5 of those years as Senior Conservator of Fine Art (Paintings) and Manager of the Sculpture & Decorative Arts Conservation Laboratory, and 2 years as Exhibition Project Manager and Head of Traveling Exhibitions. Ramsay was Associate Professor of Painting Conservation in the Master of Art Conservation Program at Queen’s University. She is an accredited member of CAPC, an elected Fellow of IIC, a Professional Associate of AIC, and a member of CAC. Ramsay has served in a volunteer capacity in several conservation organizations, including as President and Founding Director of the IIC-Canadian Group, Chairman of the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators, a Member of Council of IIC, and a Preprints Committee Member of ICOM-CC.
