About me
Cindy Connelly Ryan is a Preservation Science Specialist at the Library of Congress, with a background in physics, art conservation, and art history. Her current research projects are focused on iron gall ink deterioration and stabilization, the recreation of obsolete historic artists’ materials, non-invasive identification methods for organic colorants, and micro-fade light sensitivity testing. She frequently collaborates with researchers and curators on technical studies of collection items, and with LC’s conservators on assessments of conservation techniques and materials. Previous projects include comparisons of methods for pH and accelerated aging, studies of the alteration of verdigris in aqueous media, light fastness in anoxic and hypoxic environments, and identification of plant gums in manuscript paints. In addition to her scientific skills, Cindy brings years of experience as a practicing calligrapher and illuminator to the Inks and Skins project.
