Deena Engel is Clinical Professor Emerita in the Department of Computer Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. Professor Engel conducts research on contemporary art, specifically on the conservation and theory of computer-based art. She is the co-editor, along with Johanna Phillips of Düsseldorf, Germany, of the 2022 Routledge volume CONSERVATION OF TIME-BASED MEDIA ART. She is also the Co-Director, along with Prof. Glenn Wharton, of the Artist Archives Initiative (http://artistarchives.hosting.nyu.edu/projects/) which focuses on leveraging technology to house and disseminate information on contemporary art.
For the past 16 years, she has been working with major museums and continues to consult on projects which address the challenges involved in the conservation of Time-based media art.
She has taught undergraduate computer science courses on web and database technologies, and teaches graduate students in the Digital Humanities and the Arts. She holds an M.A. from SUNY-Binghamton in Comparative Literature, with a focus on Literary Translation; an M.S. in Computer Science from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University; and she is currently writing her dissertation for a Ph.D. at the Bard Graduate Center in New York City.
