Deirdre Windsor is an independent textile conservator, Principal of Windsor Conservation in Dover, Massachusetts where she works on the conservation of historic and contemporary textiles, costumes and fashion arts from public institutions and private collections nationwide. She was formerly the Director and Chief Conservator of the Textile Conservation Center at the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts. She holds a BFA in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. She trained in textile conservation at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Institute of Archaeology in London. In 2001, Deirdre was awarded the Rome Prize in Historic Preservation and Conservation, a fellowship funded by the National Endowment for the Arts at the American Academy in Rome to research Coptic textiles. She has published numerous articles on the conservation, mount design and display of textiles for the American Institute of Conservation and the International Committee of Museums Conservation Committee. Her work as a textile conservator in the New England region has included providing her expertise to numerous historical institutions and museums as a consultant on textile storage and handling practices, collections conservation surveys, installation services, hands-on training and workshops. Institutional clients include the Peabody Essex Museum, Harvard Art Museums, Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Historic New England, Historic Deerfield, Worcester Art Museum, The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and George Washington’s Mount Vernon.
