About me
Dr. Elizabeth Peterson is the Director of the Indigenous Collections and Repatriation Department (ICAR) at the Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM), located on the lands of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples. Holding a PhD in Archaeology, Elizabeth has spent over 18 years working on community-led archaeology and museum projects in multiple countries throughout the world. She came to RBCM in 2023 as the Director of ICAR where she has continued to learn and grow with the help of the communities/Nations she serves. Through her work with communities, Elizabeth focuses on exploring ways of healing through cultural restitution. This has included working closely with communities in reconnecting with their cultural heritage after episodes of violent conflicts and/or attempted cultural genocide. As part of her work, Elizabeth is also an Adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University and sits on several community museum advisory boards.
