Ihor Bokalo began his career as an architect in 2002. In 2010, he defended his PhD thesis, Architecture of the Lost Churches in the City of Lviv. Since then, he has been working as an Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture and Conservation at Lviv Polytechnic National University, where he teaches lectures and practical courses within two educational programs: Architecture and Fine Arts Conservation.He holds licenses in both Architectural Design and Urban Planning. His experience spans a wide range of projects, including architectural conservation, the design of new constructions, major renovations, and urban reconstruction. Some of his most notable projects include the conservation of the cells of the former St. Casimir Church in Lviv, the emergency stabilization and conservation of the wooden Descent of the Holy Spirit Church in Potelych—a UNESCO World Heritage site—and the conservation of the Black House, a renowned Renaissance building in Lviv’s old city market square.Beyond conservation projects, Ihor has served as the chief architect and main contractor for several large-scale industrial plants. Notably, he was involved in the construction of the world’s largest manufacturing facility for the Austrian company HEAD in Vinnytsia (construction began in 2021 but was suspended in 2023 due to the war), as well as two plants for the ENZYM Group Biotech Company in Vynnyky (2023–2024).He has participated in numerous grants and programs, including Unbreakable Tradition: Study of the Unique Iconostasis from Cherepin (Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, 2023), Emergency Repairs Protecting the St. Paraskeva Wooden Church in the Village of Oleksandrivka (ALIPH Foundation, 2023), and the Conservation Training Program at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection in Munich (2004).Ihor Bokalo is a member of the Ukrainian National ICCROM Committee. His primary areas of scientific research include traditional wooden architecture, particularly in the Carpathian region of Ukraine, heritage preservation legislation, and the training and education of heritage preservation professionals.In his free time, he enjoys cycling and has a deep interest in wooden architecture.
