Dr. Rick Knecht is Chairman, Quinhagak Heritage Inc, Director of Nunalleq Archaeology Project & Research Fellow with the Anchorage Museum. Rick has been conducting archaeology and cultural preservation projects in partnership with Alaska Native communities for 40 years; on Kodiak Island, the Aleutians and within the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. For the past 15 years he has co-directed the Nunalleq Archaeological Project together with Warren Jones of Qanirtuuq, Inc. in Quinhagak. He was founding director of three Alaskan institutions that hold locally-recovered artifacts and celebrate Native cultures: the Alutiiq Museum on Kodiak Island, the Museum of the Aleutians in Unalaska and the Nunalleq Museum in Quinhagak. He is currently an emeritus Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and continues to work every summer in Quinhagak. Rick has extensive experience in curating exhibitions in Alaska and vast knowledge of Yup’ik material culture and communities.
