About me
Matthew Hayes is Assistant Professor of Paintings Conservation and Co-Chair of the Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, where he has been since 2022. He has directed the Pietro Edwards Society for Art Conservation in New York, and worked at the Atelier Gerhard Walde, the Collections of the Prince of Liechtenstein, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, all in Vienna. His research interests include technical studies of works of art and the history of conservation; past publications have considered the philosophical implications of the transfer of paintings, Alois Riegl’s conservation theory, and the technique and treatment of a portrait by Titian. His book on the intersection of art history writing and the restoration of Italian Renaissance paintings, "The Renaissance Restored: Paintings conservation and art history in nineteenth-century Europe," was published by the Getty Conservation Institute in 2021.
